Taupo Golf Club History The idea of developing a golf course was first suggested in 1928 by Mr. VT Fail. By 1931 the 9 Hole Course and club was well established and was officially launched by a Labour Day Tournament. By 1954 the number of visitors to Taupo had placed such a strain on the 9 Hole Course that it was decided to extend the course to 18 holes. This course became known as the Tauhara Walking Course. In 1965 Taupo had become a substantial residential area, tourism was increasing rapidly, with farming and other businesses developing, it was evident that another golf course was necessary. A second proposal to develop land to the east of the Tauhara Course was approved. In 1973, the Centennial Championship Course was officially opened by the then current Taupo Member of Parliament, Mrs. Rona Stevenson with due ceremony and celebration. The club owes a great deal to many members, particularly in the early days when the financial position was not so healthy. Some helped financially and others by personal efforts. Today the Club continues to reap those rewards. Key Personnel
