Fairway Newsletter Taupo GC

26 June 2017 Gutentag from Renee’s Desk

Quote of the Week

“We are constituted so that simple acts of kindness, such as giving to charity or expressing gratitude, have a positive effect on our long-term moods. The key to the happy life, it seems, is the good life: a life with sustained relationships, challenging work, and connections to community”. Paul Bloom

Café

Daryl is handing over the reins to Di who will be managing the café from now on. Daryl will still provide some guidance and continue to make his wonderful tasty “pies” so we are not losing his knowledge and skills.

Daryl has been a fantastic golf club member and café owner and I have memories of him from when I played junior rep golf which was a “long” time ago! Daryl’s wit, cooking skills, loyalty and relationships with members have been second to none! Thanks for all your hard work Daryl over the many years of your involvement both as a member and contractor. We heard you were also a “mean” hockey player in your youth so you have many strings to your bow. We have been privileged to have you in our midst.

We know you are ensuring Di will continue to provide nutritious, wholesome food so your succession planning has been exemplary!! Thank you.

Tee Bookings & Course Fees

My email inbox this month has been full of notices of members using the booking system for the first time. Thank you as this is fantastic and has improved the flow of traffic through the Pro Shop.

We continue to encourage members and/or visitors to use our online booking system. There is a booking kiosk in the Pro Shop for those of you who possibly prefer not to go on line at home. It is important to us that members and visitors enjoy their golfing experience when they visit the club. Using the booking system allows the team to manage both courses more proactively e.g. rostered staff, café food management, green keepers course management and reduces frustration for members and visitors who may have to wait before they can tee off. This allows us to understand the demands on the facilities and course and also when key course management activities can be undertaken.

Greenkeepers in action

Number 2 fairway bunker is now taking shape. Drainage has been put into the Chipping Green.

Pitch March Month

In an effort to promote awareness and improve our course conditions we are running a Pitch March Month. The weekend men have something special installed!!!

We all love great greens and it’s our responsibility to ensure a pleasurable playing experience for all members and visitors by repairing pitch marks and divots. Our small team of greenkeepers also appreciate your repairs!

9 hole men at work

New tee signage is almost completed. The signs look fantastic well done team.

Women at work

Both the clubhouse gardens and carpark gardens have been getting some winter love from our wonderful women volunteers and husbands (one is not even a club member). Thanks so much for all your efforts. Soft landscaping certainly beautifies our surrounds.

Pro Shop

The cart fleet

The team from club car have completed the battery upgrades along with some minor maintenance work. Kevin has ably assisted too – I know those carters will appreciate the cart make over!

If you require a cart please book with the Pro Shop.

The Pro Shop & Admin Offices

The administrators will be moving camp into the Pro Shop office, once Louise returns from her much needed leave. Our thanks to all the volunteers who have worked tirelessly especially providing pre-loved carpet to ensure the administrators are comfortable in their new space.

Winter Coaching workshop

In the coming months we will be running some winter workshops. Dates and times will be posted in the pro-shop. This will be time to brush up your skills for the coming warmer months ahead!

Speedgolf

Dan and I were a couple “early dew sweepers” on Saturday morning. Big ups to Dan who completed his first 18 hole speed golf round.

For anyone wanting to join in the fun contact Renée. You don’t have to superfast just faster than the speed you normally play. No practice swings are the norm. It’s fun and if your time poor it’s a great way to get your 9 or 18 holes in.

Harcourt’s Matchplay Club Championships 2017 report

By Graeme Price

Highlight of the day was a hole in one (her first) on the 3rd hole on Centennial by Anne Graham. Unfortunately it was not enough to help her win her match. She was beaten 2&1 by Janine McCauley. It was Janine’s 19th win in the Silver division. The Ladies bronze 1 division was taken out by Jenny Cory over Cheryl Painter. The Ladies bronze 2 was won by Colleen Wade when she beat Fran Fuller. The 9 hole ladies winner was Pip Hull.

Jason McIntosh had a resounding victory over David Pearson to take out the Harcourt men’s Senior Matchplay championship. In the Intermediate division Ron Edwards was cruising to victory over Ernie Oxnam. At one stage he was 6 up but Ernie fought back to be only 1 down. He could not keep up the pressure and Ron went on to win 3 up. The Junior title went to John Yates for the 5th time when he beat Peter Henderson 2&1. Tony Reardon won the men’s 9 hole competition.

All the other players not involved in the Champs played a 2 ball Ambrose on Tauhara.

Neil Hickman and Mark Tito won the tournament with a nett 59.5.

They were followed by Don Plaisted and Neil Malaney on 61.5.

Pros tip

Spikes: With more rain the course is a little slipperier than normal. I would recommend you upgrade your golf shoe spikes, to

prevent a potential fall.

How often should we regrip our clubs?

Grips should be replaced every 40 rounds or every 30 rounds if you’re spending a considerable amount of time at the practice range.

Regardless of rounds played, a grip should always be replaced at the first sign of noticeable wear, including:

  • Smooth, hard surfaces
  • Cracks
  • Shiny patches
  • Wear spots, especially where the thumbs make contact
  • Faded or bare spots on grips that have been painted or have logos and
  • Complete loss of tack.

Improperly sized grips; grips that don’t enhance playing ability and grips that are simply worn-out will negatively impact your game and cost you strokes. Comfort, consistency, shot dispersion and shot distance can all be improved with new golf grips. If you are not sure of your grip size come and see one of us in the Pro Shop.

Happy winter golfing!
